Abstract:
The project proposal describes the motivations and challenges to 1nvest1gate
the application of the new emerging technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and
holographic beamforming to improve the performance of satellite communication networks. An RIS is
a multi-dimensional surface consisting of a large array of signal processing units. Due to their
simple structure, RISs can be easily mounted in the environment and controlled in real-time to
influence the propagation paths without generating its own signals. Novel architectures comprise
planar and spherical simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR) RISs where elements and both
reflections and transmissions can be individually controlled. The envisioned application of RISs
in satellite communications requires to develop novel RIS reflection models and to study their
integration with satellite channel models. lmpairments at RISs as weil as the holographic
beamforming transceivers need to be modeled including channel estimation, tracking, and the impact
of finite satellite-to-RIS feedback.
